Indians Debate Illinois Return to Native Control
Chicago July 12 The idea of returning Illinois to Native control drew mixed reactions from Indians and supporters. Chippewa Bureau of Indian Affairs employee K Fitzgerald blamed both Indians and voters for state faults, urging intelligent voting and civic involvement. Evelyn Tahsuda, Michigan Indian and bureau chief, argued Illinois is fine with proper tribal history knowledge. John Neihardt said statehood would not improve things, noting Indian governance influenced current constitution and tribal faults. George Lamotte of Chicago suggested accepting the return on terms, joking about whiskey and annual payments.

A cryptic note hints at a tangled social affair involving a dinner party. The speaker questions whether the gathering occurred in the United States or Germany, referencing Nazi crowds and a Bell Syndicate resemblance.
