In Pine Bluff a special election Tuesday rejected public housing by 3819 to 3116 despite city government backing. The vote follows 1950 and 1964 defeats amid opposition from the Pine Bluff Real Estate Board and broader unease over federal debt and taxes.
Republicans on the House Commerce Committee aim to revise the Senate passed public broadcasting bill to ensure freedom from governmental and presidential control. Ranking GOP member William J. Springer says a public nonprofit educational broadcasting corporation is sound, but expects a bill different from the Senate version. Chairman Harley O. Staggers backs administration proposals, with hearings conducted by the full committee. The Senate measure would create a public corporation to run noncommercial radio and TV networks, governed by a 15 member board with presidential and Senate appointments.
Ricky Epley, 8, of Benton, Kansas, died Tuesday night after being struck by a car on U.S. 70 in Hot Springs about 22 hours earlier. He died en route to a Little Rock hospital at Saline County Hospital. The driver was Eddie Jansen, 28, of Houston, Texas, and the boy was visiting his mother in Hot Springs.
Pine Bluff residents rejected four resolutions to form a public housing authority. The tally stood 3,166 for and 3,819 against, as Jefferson County voting machines recorded the first ballot. Polls closed at 7:30 p.m., with results released about 50 minutes later after petitions circulated by the Real Estate Board following a March 20 council vote.
City officials ordered 25 vacant dilapidated structures in Hope be improved or razed after Fire Chief James Cobb advised on risk. City Attorney James H. Clarence Mike Frost, 98, of Detroit, named by Gov. Rockefeller as his choice for director of the state Administration Department, confirmed Tuesday as the governor’s preferred candidate. Rockefeller praised Frost as “exactly what we are looking for.” Frost said he would consider the job after returning from Florida. He is assistant comptroller of the National Bank of Detroit and a Chicago native.
At an early morning Hope Chamber of Commerce breakfast directors voted unanimously to support the proposed $765,000 street improvement program. Board members Dr. Lester Sitzes Leonard Elis and Don Parker spoke before the civic group as they backed eight arterial routes with paving curb and gutter across the city.
Corinth Missionary Baptist Church announces a revival starting Sunday July 16 and running through the week at three miles southeast of Bodcaw. Pastor Rev. Hollis Dillard will preach twice daily at 10 30 a.m. and 8 p.m.
A skeleton found Sunday in Latimer County Southeastern Oklahoma was tentatively identified Tuesday as Mrs. Dela Oldham of Fort Smith Arkansas. Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation Chief Carl Tyler said the ring bearing Oldham’s maiden name identified the remains She had been missing since March.
Congolese Interior Minister Etienne Tshisekedi said white settlers were cannibalized in Lubumbashi as mutineers and loyal troops clashed in Kisangani. A Cuban American pilot escaping Kisangani described a stalemate with forces on opposite river banks.
Russell Pendleton, 20, of El Dorado, charged with first degree murder in the July 4 slaying of Cane trell Lee Breed, 19, pleaded innocent at arraignment before Judge Harry Crumpler in 1st Division Circuit Court. Breed, of El Dorado, was shot in the head at Pendleton home with a .33 caliber pistol.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara disclosed no specifics on adding troops but signaled using existing forces more effectively in Vietnam. After meeting with President Johnson, McNamara cited a two year policy allowing military leaders to determine required operations to meet political aims. Westmoreland reportedly sought up to 140,000 more troops, while current strength stood around 466,000 and discussion followed possible approval of two additional divisions totaling roughly 70,000 over months. Army officials suggested increasing the draft could cover such growth. A separate incident notes the four year old son of James and Mrs. Puryear was struck by a car on South Elm but was not seriously hurt. no charges were filed.
Eureka Springs Arkansas AP James Owens a Berryville 22 year old city policeman returned to police headquarters Tuesday night after an extensive search. Sheriff Orval Bishop said Owens sideswiped an empty car Monday around midnight and appeared frightened. Owens was due to report for work at midnight Monday but did not show up. Bishop said he was disappointed but noted everyone makes mistakes.

About 6 000 Americans live in Hong Kong and 1 000 to 1 500 visit there. Tourists are advised to consider turmoil but no travel ban is in place.
Earlis Jackson and a Marewell mother of five children at M. M. Tate High School filed a federal suit in Little Rock to stop construction of a new high school on Tate grounds. The suit argues the plan would frustrate rapid achievement of a unitary nonracial school system and cites growth pressures in Marvell school district.
