The National Weather Service forecasts hot temperatures in Arkansas through Friday with highs in the mid 90s. The outlook for Saturday through Monday remains largely unchanged with above normal temperatures expected across the period.
The Hope Star reports hot midweek weather with clear conditions across the state. Highs range 90 to 96 degrees, little chance of rain through Monday, with upper 60s to low 70s overnight. Experiment station data for 24 hours ending Thursday 7 a.m. shows a 92 high and 66 low.
The session advances bills to fund Min Foundation Aid for 43 districts, pay claims by the Claims Commission, and allocate 300000 for Camden Law Enforcement Training Academy improvements. Additional Senate funds of 100000 go to Folk Culture Center at Mountain View while an 60000 ops bill for the Environmental Preservation Commission stalls amid a filibuster and possible death.
About half of 68 American and Canadian drug offenders at Lecumberri Prison agreed to end their hunger strike after officials promised an investigation of torture and false confessions. At Santa Marta, 42 foreign women on hunger strike demanded U S Embassy probes, recounting long interrogations, abuse, and confessions signed in Spanish they could not read.
In San Antonio AP report, Dr. Joseph A. Jachimczyk the Harris County medical examiner testified that two of 27 victims died of suffocation with gags and tape. Defense challenged his identifications as jurors faced outside contact prompts.
Memorial services planned at Lonoke Baptist Church for J W McWashington who died Tuesday in a local hospital. A friend and family hour runs 8 to 9 p m Friday followed by Keystone Lodge service. Body may be viewed 9 to 10 a m Saturday with final service at 10 a m officiated by Rev L Bennie Beard Jr. Jones Funeral Services of Texarkana handles arrangements.
Lisbon Portugal Associated Press writer Fenton Wheeler reports President Antonio de Spinola is weighing a military man for Portugal's next premier. Spinola aims to replace Adelino da Palma Carlos this week as he navigates a coalition crisis after the April 25 revolt. Palma Carlos resigned citing lack of authority amid three party divisions and Spinola seeks a civilian cabinet with broader premier powers and the right to name the cabinet.
The Vatican said Pope Paul VI, aged 76, is better from a knee ailment and celebrated Mass in his private chapel. He did not schedule audiences and planned to remain in his Vatican apartment for at least another day, according to spokesman Federico Alessandrini.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Vera Buchanan Scott at First United Methodist Church Prescott with burial in DeAnn Cemetery. Also noted were death notices for William E Ward formerly of Little Rock and J T Hembree of Hempstead County with services at North Little Rock Funeral Home and unspecified burial plans. Survivors for Scott include son Samuel B Scott Jr and two Prescott sisters. For Ward survivors include wife Fannie Godley Ward and three daughters. Hembree, age 55, left four daughters and six grandchildren. services pending announcement.
Dewey Hendrix announces at a July 2 special meeting of Leslie Huddleston Post 12 of the American Legion that officers for the ensuing year are Dewey Hendrix commander Harry Hawthorne vice commander Talbot Feild Jr. adjutant Raymond Jones finance and service officer Joe Jones chaplain and O H Hoelsheer sergeant at arms. Delegates named for the department convention in Little Rock July 12 13 14 1974 include Joe Jones Harry Hawthorne Dewey Hendrix F L Downs Orville Hoelsheer Dean Murphy J B Warmack Tom Bartlett and Talbot Feild Jr with alternates E S Franklin George Dodson Pete Lively Robert H Cox Vance Marcum Claud Byrd Ernest V Ratcliff Glen Sundberg and Royce Weisenberger.
