Arkansas Supreme Court voids party nomination authority
The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that a political party central committee lacks legal authority to nominate a candidate for a general election. The decision held Governor Bailey was not the Democratic nominee in the special October election, and that vacancies may be filled by party conventions or primary elections. The ruling also involved mandamus to bar David Terry from the August primary and addressed civil service status of certain employees. The court issued injunctions on ballot items and vacancy disputes, and clarified committee authority in nominations.
