Gas Tanks Blast Docks In Richmond Va

Exploding gas tanks sent flames through Richmond dock area injuring one man and burning six homes. About 36 people, including children, were evacuated to a nearby school as more than 300 firefighters battled the three hour blaze at Crown Central Petroleum Corp dock. An employee later opened valves in asbestos suit, releasing gas into the river as the tug with the barge burned and sank.

Unemployment May Be Up Amid Record Labor Force Push

Government expected to report a jump in unemployment of at least a half million. A flood of job seekers including many graduates swells the permanent job market, with seasonal factors not fully offset by employment gains. Northwest Arkansas stays clear to mostly cloudy with warm temps and possible thundershowers, highs in the 50s to 60s, lows in the 50s to 60s, with southwestern areas similar tonight and Thursday.

Man Fights Police Over Dad's Death

In Westport Connecticut a 26 year old advertising agency worker Brendan McLaughlin shot at two police officers near his father's house after his father was killed by five gunshot wounds. He fought officers in the police station parking lot and was shot by police, with desk officer Andrew Chapo and patrolman Donald Bennette wounded. The elder McLaughlin, a 70 year old retired industrial engineer, was found dead at the scene.

May Ask Meet on Higher Education in Arkansas

Jackson County Rep. Lonnie Etheridge plans to request a special legislative session to form an advisory council on higher education. He will file a bill like one defeated in 1961, as interest grows after Gov. Faubus failed with a $60 million bond issue. Faubus is expected to call the Legislature around Aug 1 to rewrite the state construction program replacing the defeated bond plan.

Train wreck injures many near Convoy Ohio

A Pennsylvania Railroad General Trailblazer passenger train derailed after hitting a stalled trailer truck nine miles northwest of Van Wert Ohio. The eastbound track remained active while several cars toppled at a 45 degree angle and about 1,000 feet of track was damaged. Authorities reported multiple injuries, some serious, as crews inspected the wreckage and stabilized the scene.

Body Found in Truck Near Fort Smith Arkansas

A body tentatively identified as 32 year old ex convict Johnnie Windham of Pittsburg California was found in a truck on a Birr road near Fort Smith Arkansas. Coroner B G Hendrix said Windham died from multiple blows to the back of the head and a blood spattered wagon handle found nearby was thought to be the murder weapon. Windham had been dead about 18 hours. Sheriff Fred B Hayes said Pittsburg officials told him Windham had served a term in the Nevada penitentiary for a 1948 holdup. John Newman and Clyde mute discovered the body while feeding cattle after seeing the truck parked Monday and still there Tuesday. Authorities would pursue new theories about motive.

Track Tip Upside at East-Horn Rail Line Remainder Clear

About 1,000 feet of track was tipped up while the east-horn section of the railroad stayed clear. Investigators assess cause as weather or ground movement, with no injuries reported and routine repairs planned to restore full line usage.
