Engagement of Joan Cox to John William Temple

Mr and Mrs Lee Cox Sr announce the engagement of their daughter Joan to John William Temple son of Mr and Mrs Charles Newton Temple Sr of this city. Miss Cox a Texas high school graduate attended the University of Arkansas and was a Kappa Kappa Gamma member and debutante of the 1950 Cotillion Club season. Temple is a graduate of Ar kansas high school and the University.

Feds Name Negro Minister on Little Rock Ballot

The federal order placed the Rev. J. H. Gatlin on the Democratic primary ballot for city alderman in Little Rock, overruling the Pulaski county Democratic central committee which had refused his listing. The Rev. Gatlin is a member of Sigma Alpha fraternity and with Temple Lumber Co. in Pineland Texas. The Presbyterian Women will meet July 10 for Bible study led by Mrs. W. G. Bensberg. Prescott Kiwanis heard Rev. C. E. Wagner on the club essentials of organization cooperation consecration and hard work. Mrs. T. E. Logan attends the Presbyterian Women's Training school in Montreal July 5–12. Mr. S. C. Lagan and Rev. W. S. Bensberg attended Ouachita Presbytery in Fordyce Tuesday.

James Broach to Assist Vernon Whitten in Seventh District bid

James Broach of Camden and El Dorado will serve as Assistant Campaign Manager for Vernon Whitten in his bid for Congress from the Seventh District. Broach is well known for radio industry connections and imitations that drew favorable attention to Whitten’s campaign in 1940 and 1948, as recalled by Mercia Mochidheb ground.

Eisenhower Urges Scouts At Valley Forge Jamboree

General Eisenhower addressed 47,000 Boy Scouts at the Valley Forge jamboree urging clear ideas of freedom and costs. He warned the rough world will demand much as he led a pledge ceremony echoing the Normandy invasion. Fireworks and cheering followed his unheralded appearance before the vast crowd.

Colorful Bandit in Italy Killed

Salvatore Giuliano, the famed Sicilian bandit king who proclaimed his own government, was shot in his mountain hideout near Castelvetrano as police closed in after a two week pursuit. The special unit of 2,000 carabinieri trapped him by dawn, ending a career blamed for nearly 100 police deaths. Some followers escaped after a brief, fatal exchange.
