Zachary Taylor faced a postage drama over 1848 stamps when nominated by the Whigs for the presidency. The committee avoided the stamp, Taylor refused the unstamped message, learned later of the notification, accepted the nomination, and was elected. He died July 9 1850 at age 86. A 25th anniversary stamp in 1875 honored his portrait.
