The map shows three action areas in the southwest Pacific. Mac Arthur’s troops land in New Guinea while forces occupy Mid-Coral Sea islands and press attacks in the Central Solomons all aiming at Rabaul. The New Guinea landings threaten the Japanese stronghold at Rabaul.

North Little Rock July 2 Normal Hart Ward 35 died in a hospital from head injuries after an altercation at the curb market. Police said three men and a woman are held for questioning and a fourth man is being sought. Ward and five others argued on Highway 70 and the quarrel moved to the Curb Market cafe. The cafe was wrecked and Ward died without regaining consciousness. Survivors include two sons a daughter his parents five sisters and five brothers all of North Little Rock.
Operators were drilling at 4635 feet on the Brooks Shults No 4 prospect. Barnsdall conducts Red Lake wildcat test early today with indications of completion by next Monday. An oilman said operations were progressing as expected and should hit or miss over the weekend barring accidents.
Ration Book No 1 lists Coffee Stamp No 24 valid for one pound until June 30 and Sugar Stamp No 13 for five pounds until August 15. Caning stamps 15 and 16 cover five pounds each, Shoes Stamp No 18 valid for one pair through October 31. Ration Book No 2 Blue Stamps K L M cover canned vegetables and fruits until July 7. Red Stamps J K L M N cover meats fats oils cheese canned fish and milk until June 30. Gasoline Stamps No 6 A-books grant four gallons each until provided.
The University of Arkansas Fruit and Truck Branch Experiment Station will hold its annual visiting day on Friday July 9 led by George W. Ware. The event teaches wartime crop practices with morning demonstrations and talks on Food Production and Feed Production by J R Cooper and R P Bartholomew.
July 2 report lists 231 American POWs including Pfc I W Duke of Rosston and Pvt Julius W Stewart of Clarendon. Stewart noted as a hero for early 1941 Philippines actions defending Bataan and stopping Japanese assaults at Abucay Hacienda.
Statewide ceiling prices on 400 food items take effect next Tuesday in Arkansas under an Office of Price Administration order. The ceilings, replacing Pulaski county limits, apply to Texarkana Texas and cover canned vegetables and fruits breakfast cereals processed fish baby food coffee butter syrup macaroni meat products cheese shortening flour poultry bread and sugar. Local rationing boards will administer the ceilings.
The Office of Price Administration hikes beef points by one to two per pound for July, with popular cuts from 9 to 13 points, effective July 4 through August 1. Veal, lamb, and mutton see red coupon increases, pork stays unchanged, and canned fish rises except oysters. New blue coupon costs start July 4.
Rohwer July 2 An official of the War Relocation Authority here said big California landowners using Mexican labor could not compete with Japanese farmers running family-type plots. Dr J B Hunter community affairs director described the wholesale evacuation as unjustified, while open-house interviews allowed reporters from Arkansas Louisiana Mississippi and Tennessee to view the camp and tour without clearance.
Funeral services for John S. Hartsfield 57 of Hempstead will be held Saturday at 2 30 p m at Holly Grove with active pallbearers John Wilson Roy Thrash Bill Schooler Lafayette Roberts J D Green and J O Luck listed among those serving.
The Associated Press reports 139 Arkansans named on U S casualty lists issued in June by the Army and Navy. Sixty eight were prisoners of war, 39 wounded, 16 missing, 13 killed and three dead from disease in a Japanese prison camp. Lists cover all theaters of operation. Many POWs had not been heard from since Corregidor fell.
James H. Jones assumed the Rotary presidency at a Hotel Barlow luncheon, succeeding Bill Wray as the 1943 44 year opened. He outlined goals for the year and urged ongoing community support. Jones hosted a dinner with officers and committee heads to review the 1943 44 program. guests included Roy E. Chase of Little Rock and Henry White of Murfreesboro Tennessee.
United Mine Workers of Oklahoma and Arkansas were ordered by John L. Lewis to keep coal production going through the July 4 holiday. The directive went to 6,200 district miners in response to a request from Secretary Ickes to sustain output during the holiday period.
