Roscoe Turner edged toward a coast-to-coast record in a 12000 dollar air derby as tragedy struck early when Russell Boardman crashed during takeoff in Indianapolis. Turner reached Albuquerque eight and a half hours after New York, at 12 29 EST, aiming to beat the 12 hours 33 minutes coast-to-coast mark. Amelia Earhart and other contenders kept flying after a day of crashes and withdrawals in the national air races opening in Los Angeles.
MARSHALL Texas editors of the Longview Daily News Sybil Parker appeared in court to avoid contempt and named five persons who could testify about alleged bribery in the transport of 3.2 percent beer through Harrison county. Judge Reuben Hall had urged revealing sources for the story and hinted Parker could face a short jail sentence if he refused.
A plan proposed by Arkansas legislators would replace 1933 bond refunding with a strategy using all highway revenues to cover interest on 146 million dollars in bonds. It frames the move as paying creditors what is possible, not a refunding, and could yield about three percent annual interest on bonds if enacted by a special session.
Washington cabinet in charge of public works fixed a 4 percent interest rate on loans for all public projects. It also announced that states and counties may borrow 75 percent of project costs and will receive a grant covering materials and labor.
Amsterdam reports 25 seaplanes led by Air Minister Balbo took off from Orbetello on a 6,100 mile cruise to Chicago for the World Fair. An accident during landing left one man missing briefly, later denied. Three of the four aboard the overturned aircraft were injured. The route includes Amsterdam Londonderry Reykjavik Cartwright Shadiac Montres and finally Chicago.
CHICAGO. John Factor known as Jake the Barber was abducted on a North Side street early Saturday. His wife and son watched as unidentified kidnappers sped away with the millionaire, once a barber. Authorities report ransom sought between 100000 and 150000 dollars. Jerome Factor, the father’s son, had been kidnapped recently but was returned after an intensive search led by his father.
An exclusive tire shop opened Saturday at 216 South Walnut Street in Hope, run by H. W. Smith who moved here from Pine Bluff. Smith formerly labored at Goodyear in Akron and now offers fire vulcanizing and tire repairs with modern equipment. Lane Taylor, a Hope High School graduate, assists. Dust from the Sahara Desert has reportedly traveled to Great Britain.
Albert Russell Erskine, 62, former president of Studebaker, died by suicide at his South Bend home shortly before noon Saturday. His body was found later by his adopted son, Albert Russell Erskine Jr. The Studebaker firm, once headed by Erskine, faced receivership last year amid a deadlock over White Motors takeover. Studebaker remains majority owner of White and controls Pierce Arrow.
The Kiwanis club of Hope marked five years with a barbecue at Pair Park attended by about sixty-five members Kiwanis queens and guests. Rev Wallace R Rogers praised the fellowship and continued community service while Rev Geo F X Strassner reported on district and international Kiwanis activities. Toastmaster John P Cox led the program with music by Ridg hill’s string band and tributes to Cox.
City Dry Forces in Hope held a private meeting at Hope city hall last Tuesday night. N. P. O Neal said out of 6 persons invited, 48 attended. The program featured addresses by Rev. Walace R. Rogers First Baptist pastor City Attorney Atkins Rev J H Bennett Mrs H H Stuart president of the W C T U and Mrs John Arnold.
Governor Futrell said the state has no funds to pay the expenses for J A Tetinie chief accountant of the old Highway Audit Commission to testify about alleged criminal acts during the Highway Department investigation. The remark followed a Pulaski County Grand Jury suggestion that Rennie return from Kansas to testify. The Grand Jury said there were not enough facts for indictments and Futrell noted Rennie had offered to assist once his final report was ready.
Hempstead county farmers have offered 1 042 acres for abandonment under two acreage reduction plans. Cotton prices steady above 10 cents on central markets, driven by the campaign to reduce production. If not enough acres are secured, 1993 crop reduction fails and prices may fall. officials urge participants to obtain contracts at listed locations.
Chief Baker announces beer sales are prohibited and to enforce the state law and city ordinance. Officers report 2.2 percent beer found in Hope with no arrests yet. Trucks from Louisiana carry beer into town as wholesalers suspend local sales but resume via trucks. Governor Futrell may seek repeal implications if Arkansas votes July 18.
