East Coast Snow Storm Dumps Deep Across Region
A blistering East Coast blizzard and cold snap left snow depths up to two feet in parts of Virginia and widespread travel disruption from Florida to Maine. At least 72 deaths occurred across 16 states from accidents and heart attacks amid broken airports, highway closures, and emergency declarations. Washington logged its heaviest snow in years as federal workers stayed home and schools closed. New York, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, and Montreal faced zero visibility and slick roads as thousands were stranded and a major chain-reaction crash on the New York Thruway injured many. National Guard was mobilized in Delaware and icy conditions threatened crops in northern and central Maryland amid ongoing travel chaos and power outages in several cities.
