A reader letter from Eugene S Horner discusses The Star Page One epigrams. He explains the meaning behind lines about a country boy taking 20 years to reach town and $100,000 to return as a gentleman farmer, and the garage eclipsing the smoke house. He links the lines to changes from agrarian self sufficiency to industrial dependence, with notes on regional pork curing methods and a generation gap in interpretation.
The Pentagon identified Pfc. Ronald L. Ridgeway as a prisoner of war in a North Vietnamese camp, listed among 555 U S service members. Ridgeway was believed killed in a 1968 ambush near Khe Sanh and later funerals were held for him. Separately, President Kennedy’s presidential limo from 1961 will be retired to a museum, with the Secret Service coordinating its return to Ford.
In Saigon procedural disputes delayed dispatch of cease-fire observers into South Vietnam provinces while South Vietnamese forces reported over 250 new cease-fire violations by North Vietnam and the Viet Cong since Monday noon. In Honolulu U S Pacific Command said B 52s and fighter bombers continued strikes in Laos and Cambodia at local governments request. Vice President Agnew arrived in Saigon for talks with Thieu about postwar relations and reaffirmed U S support for Thieu as South Vietnam’s legitimate government. The International Commission’s seven regional teams failed to deploy on time due to internal dispute among the four nations. A second North Vietnamese Viet Cong delegation waited in Saigon, declining to complete entry formalities at Tan Son Nhut. Ambassador Bunker met Thieu as Agnew arrived and the government waived the immigration forms for the arriving delegates.
The Arkansas House approved Gov. Dale Bumpers backed kindergarten plan 72-25, sending it to the Senate. The measure, under a 1968 constitutional amendment, estimates $9,000 per full day class and $4,500 for half day, with about $10 million sought for two years. Opponents warned it favors rich districts, supporters tout a substantial early start.
In Thanh Phuoc Vietnam a cease fire celebration was followed by a Viet Cong assault that wrecked about half the village. Residents eyed the smoldering homes, saved tin sheets, and charred coconuts as they planned to start anew amid ash and loss. Local families mourned destroyed houses and vanished livelihoods, while cows and chickens perished in the shelling.
At Clark Air Base Philippines reporters describe nickel plated copper POW bracelets worn by thousands of Americans named on the bands who are imprisoned or missing in Indochina. With POWs returning home the bracelets may be collected and the bands broken.
