Appropriations Panel Cuts 6 Percent From Truman Estimates
Washington January 30 The House Appropriations Committee advanced the first major money bill of the 1948 session with a 6 per cent cut in President Truman's spending estimates. It reduced the emergency fund from 1 million to 700 thousand dollars and trimmed or eliminated several items. The panel proposed 99 million 84 thousand 51 dollars for the presidential office and 22 agencies for the new fiscal year starting July 1, while the president's budgeted total remained about 1.048 billion. It also shaved 100 thousand from 400 thousand for the Council of Economic Advisers and rejected a 504 thousand set aside for possible drafts. The committee warned the emergency fund should not fund non emergency boards or commissions or nonessential uses. The final 760 thousand dollar package was adjusted with 200 thousand earmarked elsewhere.
