The forecast from the National Weather Service expects skies to clear tonight over Atkafisag with no rain mentioned. A chance of light rain or drizzle is possible in the northern part of the state tonight and Tuesday.
A severe thunderstorm watch covered much of south Arkansas late Sunday, with a tornado watch issued for Chicot County. A reported touchdown near Collins and damage at McGehee and Collins occurred, injuring one person. Storms diminished by morning, bringing cooler air. Temperatures Friday reached 60s to 70s, with today’s highs in the upper 40s to low 60s and Tuesday’s in the mid 50s to mid 60s. Local rainfall totals include Pine Bluff 0.91, El Dorado 0.67, Texarkana 0.80, Little Rock 1.18 inches.
Obituaries list Jake Aslin aged 49 of Newport a World War II veteran and Arkansas Power and Light distribution designer of 26 years with survivors in multiple states. Dr Robert K. Luther a dean for student development at Henderson State College is the featured speaker for the Lincoln Day Dinner at Town and Country Restaurant Hope on February 5. Congress opens its second week with debate on a proposal to run legal aid for the poor via an independent government corporation. The measure faces strong opposition from Senate conservatives led by Sen. Jesse Helms who have filed more than ten amendments. The Senate will also act on an emergency energy bill and the House plans to begin consideration of pension reform legislation.
NATB reports 1143 boats stolen in 1973 with nearly 9000 boat thefts in FBI NCIC records. NATB manager C C Benson urges engraving driver license or SSN on boat, power unit, and trailer to deter theft. Boat owners neglect boat security while auto thefts receive attention.
Edward Kanieski, freed in 1972 after a 20 year term for a first degree murder conviction, saw his $250,000 false imprisonment claim rejected by the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the State Claims Board. He contends his life, health, and family suffered while his conviction was overturned. the board required clear evidence of innocence. California leads in rice production.
