Nixon Press Conference Signals New Tactics in Mideast and Arms
President Nixon, in a roughly 28 minute East Room briefing, outlined possible shifts in policy toward Arab-Israeli tensions and a move away from Johnson era mediation. He urged new initiatives to cool the Mideast and suggested direct talks with the Soviet Union on missile reduction. He described U S strength as sufficiency rather than superiority or parity and defended pursuing a more open, television friendly approach to communicating with the public.
