Johnson Seeks Senate reversal on food sales ban to Nasser
Johnson’s administration pressed the Senate to reverse a House ban on surplus farm goods to the United Arab Republic. Secretary of State Rusk argued the move limits presidential foreign policy flexibility while some lawmakers cited Nasser’s hostile stance toward Israel and his remark to American aid. The House amendment targets about 37 million dollars in wheat, tobacco, and vegetable oils slated for Cairo, with October expiry.
