Artificial coffee idea revived as cereal substitute noted
Mrs Mescal Johnston of the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service says a bran wheat and molasses coffee substitute has been on the market for 75 years and resembles slightly sweetened coffee in flavor. The four ounce jar costs about a third of instant or freeze dried coffee but yields fewer teaspoons per weight, with a hot cup costing about 3.3 cents versus 2 to 3 cents for other coffee forms. Ground coffee at $2.59 to $2.99 per pound yields five to six cents per cup using two tablespoons per cup.
