Extreme Cold and Snow Hold Nation in Grip of Winter
Brutal weather draped much of the country as heavy snow, freezing rain, and icy drizzle slowed traffic and caused travel warnings. The Weather Bureau warned relief would be slow with more winter weapons to come while deaths rose to at least 141 since the cold began spreading from the central region. Temperatures varied with subzero readings in the Plains and silent outbreaks in the Southeast, while the Northeast thawed slightly and the Pacific Northwest faced freezing lines.
