Appropriations for State Offices Are Studied by Solons
LITTLE ROCK The Senate began consideration of the biennial general appropriations for constitutional offices by adopting a budget committee amendment raising the state auditor's annual appropriation from 31500 to 32700 to equalize salaries with other state workers. Representative Ward recalled a House-passed bill for 100000 biannually to the Arkansas Library Commission, accusing members of misusing common school funds. The House set the two percent sales tax bill as a special order and debated the preferential primary bill. The Senate rejected a Wilkes amendment that would keep the number of assistant attorneys general and salaries at present levels. The appropriation bill provides for five assistants at 3000 yearly. The house introduced a wholesale liquor bill to run a state department of Alcoholic Liquor Control with a board to manage wholesale sales and warehouses, asserting a 15 percent minimum profit on about 19 million in annual sales, but no repeal of current liquor taxes.
