Senate Passes Peach Brandy Bill and Related Measures
The Arkansas Senate, after a three day recess, passed three house bills and defeated one. They deferred action on another and placed nine new Senate bills on call. The body approved a measure by Brandy Jack Owen to authorize fruit brandy manufacture for sale outside the state, 18 to 12, after an unsuccessful challenge. A penitentiary loan bill transferring about 25,000 from various funds to the penitentiary for the 1934 crop was approved 29 to 2, with amendments removing a 15,000 transfer from the land sales furs to the permanent school fund. A third 12,000 appropriation for the special session was amended to authorize transferring 40,000 from the motor vehicle carrier tax fund and the DeValls Bluff toll bridge fund to the legislative fund, leaving 36,000 previously allotted. Senator Johnson noted funds aren’t tied by a federal injunction and an additional 4,000 may stay in the legislative fund for next year.
