An Associated Press dispatch reports Grand Canyon wild burros are increasing roughly 20 percent yearly and park managers expect to shoot 1,000 of them over five years unless homes for the animals are found. Jay Rowe Sr., 102, of Emerson Arkansas died Sunday in a local nursing home. A retired farmer and Baptist, he lived with his son J W Rowe Jr since 1969. He is survived by two sons, five daughters, two sisters, 24 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Funeral at 2 30 p m Monday at Mount Pisgah Cemetery near Emerson with Lewisville Funeral Home in charge.

A car fire on Main Street followed a red light violation by Winfred Cooper of Washington who escaped injury and faced reckless driving charges. Minor damage occurred at Pitt Grill lot. no charges reported in the hit and run incident.
Vice President Mondale told the NATO council in Brussels that President Carter may raise U S investment in NATO defense despite plans to cut the Pentagon budget. He urged continued defense spending growth and emphasized a closer Atlantic partnership with Western Europe as Mondale tours major capitals. He also pledged a separate Belgian Common Market representative at the spring summit and outlined a broad European visit.
Hempstead County Cattlemen's Association seeks help to stop cattle theft with a reward fund for information leading to arrests and convictions. Several producers have pledged 10 to 100 dollars, with bank accounts opened at Citizens and First National Bank in Hope listed as Cattlemen's Association Reward Fund.

Services were held in Magnolia for former Arkansas Governor Ben T. Laney who died Friday night at age 80. Laney led the Dixiecrat revolt at the 1948 Democratic National Convention before withdrawing from nomination talks and later losing to Sid McMath in 1950. Born November 2, 1896, near Smackover, he served in World War I, ran businesses, and was Camden mayor for two terms.
