The Arkansas Public Service Commission approved a continuance in the Arkla gas rate case. The hearing, which began January 6, will resume February 15 after industrial users requested more time for cross examination of Arkla witnesses.
The draft topics include a penny newspaper tax reporting monthly to the state revenue commissioner, a self-insurance program for public schools and universities via a state commission, and a home rule bill for first class cities allowing certain local taxes. State Medical Examiner Dr. Rodney Carlton says cocaine was the primary cause of death for two Arkansas AM&N College students, Hugh Ford of El Dorado, 22, and Edward Reynolds, 21, also of El Dorado. Ford’s body contained dextra cocaïne, LSD, traces of amphetamines, ether and methyl alcohol. Reynolds had the same drugs minus amphetamines. Ford died in his dormitory room, Reynolds in front of his off campus home.

Dale Bumpers told Pine Bluff Chamber attendees that the four lane highway from Pine Bluff to Little Rock is nearing reality after the legislature approved a bill creating a toll road turnpike authority. He said toll roads are not ideal but necessary and noted efforts to repurpose Pine Bluff Arsenal facilities for peaceful use. A McClellan Pryor telegram signaled a 30 day expected arsenal announcement. The desert ironwood of the American southwest is noted as the hardest wood.

A hotel fire forced a postponement of James L. Townley’s trial in Little Rock. Townley, ex General Dynamics quality chief, is charged with conspiring to conceal defective Selb parts for the F111 fighter bomber. Five witnesses were treated in hospital but none seriously injured. The trial resumes with Townley continuing as the first of seven defendants in the case.
The Yes We Can recycling program led by Alcoa, featuring Irene Ryan known as Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies, collected over 18 million cans last year and is active in San Diego and Dallas Fort Worth with plans to expand to Evansville, Indiana early this year.
Washington AP reports Senator Richard B. Russell died at 73 from respiratory problems aided by emphysema. A Democrat first elected in 1933, he chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee and served as president pro tempore for more than half his life.
