Renew Fight Over Cities Tax Power in Arkansas
The proposed constitutional convention provision would allow city and county bodies to levy taxes such as sales or payroll taxes without voter approval, needing two thirds legislative override. Little Rock leaders like City Manager Meriwether support it for broader, fairer revenue, while labor groups and delegates warn of unequal burdens and unchecked power. Becker of the Arkansas AFL-CIO predicts tax shifts to lower and middle income groups, as officials seek new revenue. A Little Rock delegate argues the provision concentrates power and should be referred to the people.
