Reynolds lays off about 125 employees at Malvern plant

Reynolds Metals Co. laid off about 125 workers Thursday at the Jones Mills aluminum reduction plant near Malvern Arkansas due to curtailed natural gas. One of five 25 000 ton reduction pots was shut down as supply remained limited this week. Workers may qualify for state unemployment benefits and some with enough seniority can draw supplemental funds from a company pool. Arkansas Louisiana Gas President Sheffield Nelson said the cutback is statewide for industries with alternative fuels.

J E Ward 90 longtime Hempstead County resident dies

James Edwin Ward of Hope dies at 90 in a local hospital. He was a retired manager of the Temple Cotton Oil Mill and a former county delinquent tax collector. Survived by wife Callie Ward and two nephews James H. Ward and Robert E. Ward. funeral Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Herridon chapel with two pastors officiating. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery. Prescott logger survives Missouri Pacific collision at Emmet

Jim Wicker a 39 year old logger from Prescott escaped injury when a Missouri Pacific train struck his eastbound log truck at the Highway 299 crossing in Emmet. The train hit the cab and moved 22 cars beyond impact as the engineer stated a 55 mph speed. The highway was blocked about an hour as investigators examined the scene. Wicker credited luck after leaping clear prior to impact. his truck was totaled.

Weyerhaeuser to buy Murfreesboro Lumber and Timber

Weyerhaeuser Co. will acquire Murfreesboro Lumber Co. and Murfreesboro Land and Timber Co. The deal announced by Murfreesboro leaders and Weyerhaeuser VP Greg Van Bibber covers the mill complex and 35750 acres of timberland in southwestern Arkansas. Negotiations began in September. the mill runs two shifts with annual output of 25 to 30 million board feet.

Navy abandons harbor search in Spain collision toll

The U S Navy ended its search for the last of 49 American sailors and Marines killed when a Navy landing craft collided with a Spanish freighter in Barcelona harbor.
