Inauguration Day Protests See Holds and Arrests
Washington AP reports Tuesday’s inauguration day protests failed to interrupt the events as demonstrators clashed with police along Pennsylvania Avenue. About eighty arrests for disorderly conduct occurred, with two youths charged for burning a flag and one for assaulting an officer. White masked demonstrators, some in hip attire, faced a strong police line as paratroopers reinforced security and Nixon’s armored limousine moved past.

Brandon vows ethics bill to curb conflicts in Arkansas
Little Rock representative G. D. Brandon plans a government ethics code to require disclosure of all business and personal interests by state workers. He argues this would restore public trust and allow updates without prohibiting votes, contrasting with Rep. Hayes McClerkin’s earlier, narrower proposal.

University Merger Bill Hearing Set in Arkansas
In Little Rock, a public hearing was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. January 28 on a bill to merge the University of Arkansas with Little Rock University. The measure, introduced in both chambers, sparked a tense exchange between Sen. Ben Allen and Sen. Guy H. Jones as the Education Committee opted to set the hearing rather than rush action. The session also touched on a first offenders facility for under 21 felony convicts, a study on converting Tucker Prison Farm, and a hearing aid dispenser board bill that may be reconsidered. The day included committee motions, caucus actions, and adjournments.
