Dock Workers Accept U S Proposals
New York AP report says striking longshoremen accepted a 39 cents per hour package over two years under a presidential board plan, with 24 cents in wage boosts. Ship owners may delay action until Tuesday. The pact could set a pattern for Southeast and Gulf ports, as mediation continues across Atlantic and Gulf coast ports. The strike has halted about 60,000 workers and disrupted 550 ships, with losses near 600 million dollars. The agreement proposes a 15 cent hourly wage rise retroactive to Oct 1 and a further cent rise next Oct 1, plus studies on manpower utilization and job security by the Labor Department.
