Africa U S A jungle compound near Los Angeles
The Helfer operation, renamed Africa U S A, sits about 45 miles north of Los Angeles on 160 acres. Owner Ralph Helfer and wife Toni run a 45 person staff caring for 500 to 600 wild animals daily. They train animals from around the world to be movie and TV stars using gentle, consistent methods begun with the young. In 15 years no Helfer has been attacked and the creatures are treated with continual kindness to earn their cooperation.
