Boycott Hits Hialeah Opens 41st Season Amid Dispute
Hialeah Park begins its 41st season amid a broad horsemen boycott that could cost the track and state as much as 150000 for today. Only 33 horses entered and three races canceled, with most races reduced to five or six runners. The Royal Poinciana Handicap becomes a two horse race, and betting plans remain uncertain. Horsemen seek purse increases from 43 to 47 percent of the track’s share, arguing for more than 200000 in added money for the meeting while the track offers 80000.
