Rice farmers push for allotment relief amid cuts
Arkansas, Missouri, and Mississippi rice farmers met to discuss the 1970 rice acreage allotment cut to 1,836,461 from 2,160,142. Mills urged using 10 million dollars of Title II funds from Public Law 480 for rice. L. C. Carter warned of a $30 million impact to Arkansas from the allotment reduction, with $19 million from lost production and the rest from lower processing and labor costs. The cut reflects a USDA estimate of a 16.3 million bushel rice surplus by July 1.
