January 17 social and personal notices list meetings at various homes for Women’s groups and flags of church auxiliaries. Activities include the Firat Baptist Funneft, Presbyterian Women, American Legion Auxiliary, YWA cancellation, and Hope High School PTA and FTA reports with room count prizes noted.
A vocal duet in The Garden by Misses Billy Joan Ramsey and Betty Porter with Miss Nelsan Frances Mal Uns accompanied. Reverend Stephen Cook spoke on Can I Afford to Drink. An Institute on Christian Social Relations was held at First Methodist Church with Mrs. J. Russell Henderson conducting. Luncheon followed and a round table discussion aided by Mrs. E. D. Galloway. Tabernacle Sunday School classes hosted a Pillowship Fellowship Hour with a spaghetti dinner for 127 guests served by church youth.
Rev and Mrs James Hamill of Memphis led a service at the Tabernacle with Mrs Hamill singing. He spoke on The Importance and Work of the Sunday School. Brownie Scout Troop No 4 met at Brookwood School electing new officers led by Mrs KH L Atther Jr. Gardenia Garden Club and Business and Professional Women's Club held meetings with talks on camellias and health and safety. Members pledged to March of Dimes and new faces joined several groups while outings and visits occurred in Hope, Texarkana, and Little Rock areas.
County Health Unit announces an immunization clinic at Patmos Negro School on January 2 at 2 p.m. Parents are invited to attend. The item mentions glaucoma named by Hippocrates and a cash register with up to 250 years of history.
Rev wm P Hnrdegree pastor of First Christian Church leaves January 17 to preside at the Arkansas Christian Ministers Institute in Little Rock. Dr Job Barclay of Central Christian Church Austin Texas will be guest speaker on the World Council at Amsterdam theme with addresses from his Amsterdam delegation experience.
Pere David's deer, a species native to China, now survives only on the Duke of Bedford's estate in England. The deer are the last remaining individuals of their kind, with the population reduced to a sole surviving group on the historic estate.
Whitesburg Ky Jan 14 Grant Farnell Jr 12 was shot to death after being chased by dogs while knocking at a house front door. Lester Polly 85 surrendered to authorities charged with murder and released on 7000 bond awaiting the April grand jury. Cornett son of Mrs Amanda Ackman was returning from a basketball game when dogs pursued him. he knocked at Pollys door in a Line Fort district, Polly said he feared break ins and acted to protect his home.
