A senate committee reported today on President Truman's request regarding naval matters. The action surprised officials, with wording indicating reconsideration or delay of the proposal. Officials provided few details, noting ongoing discussions and the need for further review before any final decision.
President Truman faces indecision as legislation to appoint Maj. Gen. Lawrence S. Kuter as CAB chairman stalls. Press Secretary states no decision yet on new selection or CAB position, while Stoss reports the issue in flux. Kuter, in Montreal as US representative to ICAO, says he will not resign from the Air Force to lead the CAB.
The governor, addressing agricultural policy, pressed soil conservation and crop diversification, argued taxes should be rotated back to counties and school districts to a definite level, and backed removing the state from ad valorem tax while keeping fees locally. He supported continued highway improvement but opposed more highway bonds, citing interest money as insufficient for road building.
The Arkansas State Chapter received a $15,000 advance from the National Foundation to support ongoing medical care for polio patients in Arkansas. The funds will help meet financial obligations and sustain the current March of Dimes campaign to replenish money spent during the 1946 epidemic and 1947 treatment efforts.
Washington January 14 One person was killed and another injured in a four alarm fire at the Potomac Hotel near the White House. The dead man was identified as QO Hickox of Cleveland 9 Harold Sill 49 a Potomac Hotel resident on the fifth floor was admitted to Emergency Hospital in good condition. Fire confined to the top floor after about an hour while most guests were evacuated from the 45 room building located on Pennsylvania Avenue west of the presidential mansion. Sixty people were registered as occupants when the fire broke out.
A dining table led to the death of Richard I of England, a Crusades leader and survivor of long waits. He was fatally wounded while striving to obtain a massive table from Aymar, Viscount of Limoges, whom he claimed ownership of.
Chicago grain and oilseeds surged to new highs on the Board as corn soybeans and wheat rallied amid midwest weather and rising feed demand. Livestock trade at St Louis and New York saw mixed results with cattle and hog prices varying, while butter eggs and poultry moved modestly higher.
The Agriculture Department reported rice markets firm last week with demand moderate and export permits slowing trade. Puerto Rico and Louisiana had adequate supplies while domestic demand remained active for later shipments. Milled rice prices held near unchanged with a slight uptick noted. Progress in this year’s crop advanced in the south, with Texas and Louisiana showing gains comparable to last season.
