Debt refunding plan eyes end of second week vote
Governor's refunding committee and creditors reach a tentative plan to raise funds by preserving turnback funds for the state and increasing the gasoline tax. Legislators are urged to wipe out the turnback fund and raise gas tax from six to six and a half cents, affecting Hempstead county landowners who could face over $60,000 in new taxes. The piece argues the turnback money is squandered and the legislature is guided by that realization.
