Police list a suspect described as a known swindler in Illinois. Report mentions a petition filed yesterday seeking commitments, with the case centered in Springfield.
Aboard the Flying Arrow the master announced the ship abandoned the blockade attempt off the Chinese coast after shelling by nationalist gunboats. The freighter carrying jute, baled cotton, and acetone soda valued at about 10 million dollars faced fire and explosion risks before two American destroyers aided and then departed. Captain David Jones of Chicago stated the ship would proceed to Tsingtao once seaworthy.
Engel remains in Cook County Jail after a two month term following his conviction for swindling Mrs Reseda Corrigan, a Chicago widow aged 100. The court rejected his plea to delay the prison sentence until February 20 to prepare an appeal.
In Formosa the foreign ministry said the Flying Arrow shelling was a necessary step to enforce port closures. Shih Chao ying noted sovereign powers may regulate ports and sanction violating ships, while Robert Strong discussed the incident with George Yoh. Cairo Jan 12 Egypts newly dominant Wafd party will fill 225 of the 919 seats in the new parliament which meets Monday after runoff elections last Tuesday widened Mustapha Nahhas Pashas Wafd to 56 more seats. Eight deputies switched allegiance. final lineup shows Wafd 225, Saadists 28, Liberal Constitutionalists 26, Independents 33, Nationalists 6, Socialists 1.
In Little Rock on January 12, a Gazette strike persists over union status of circulation staff. Labor Commissioner Call says negotiations settled the original dismissal clause, but a new issue about whether circulation employees who are Guild members are in the bargaining unit remains unresolved, with NLRB asked to study. Twenty three newswriters and photographers striked December 17, ten more circulation workers joined later, while daily editions continue and a picket line stands outside the building.
The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission announces a quarterly statewide hearing to be held in Magnolia next week. Director Lester F. Danforth said the session will occur on January 19 or the following day, outlining agenda items affecting oil and gas operations in the state.
