Tornado Toll Rises Across Four States

A swarm of deadly tornadoes swept Dixie Friday leaving at least 11 known dead and about 200 injured across four states with damage in the millions. McComb Mississippi suffered four dead and 115 injured as 300 homes were ruined. Ruth and nearby areas reported multiple fatalities.

Three Arkansas Legislators Back Education Goals

More than 125 gathered at Hope High School Library to hear Rep. Larry Patterson Rep. Olen Hendrix and Rep. Chuck Honey discuss Arkansas Education Association goals for 1975. They covered raises sick leave funding school supply funding and retirement changes with the lawmakers weighing feasibility and state funds. Patterson warned full funding may be tight and favored the highest feasible teacher raise while Honey supported generous teacher pay and retirement moves but doubted a union’s impact on professionalism. Hendrix projected long term gains and supported sick leave and existing supply funding while noting the council’s $1 million increase for supplies.

Pike County Plans Overall Economic Development Plan

Pike County in Arkansas revises its Overall Economic Development Plan led by County Extension agent-staff chairman Bobby G. Perry. A special computer setup by Gus Wingfield coordinates input from Murfreesboro Glenwood and Delight mayors, Chamber of Commerce, and local leaders to shape organization, redevelopment area, economy, area pools, action programs, responsibility and evaluation. The plan guides municipal growth, service needs, new industry placement and population trends.

Sheraton Inn Opens Here Monday

The Sheraton Inn Hope on Highway 4 at I-30 will open Monday with 88 rooms and a dining room serving 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Manager is Bill Harris, native of Ozan. The motel features a Country French style and a formal opening is planned for the Spring.

Ford Layoffs Hit 52,000 At Auto Makers Amid Slump

DETROIT AP Ford Motor Co moves to suspend operations at more than half its assembly plants for a week as down auto sales deepen. Chrysler and General Motors plan sizable layoffs next week while Ford to cut 52,125 workers temporarily and close multiple plants. Indefinite layoffs push U.S. auto jobless rolls higher as industry braces for a prolonged downturn and possible price concessions from Chrysler.

Record Auction Fueled by Arts Club Fundraiser

The Third District Arts and Crafts Club hosts a 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. record auction at Countryside Yamaha on Highway 4 North offering about 1000 records from KXAR. Proceeds fund a Hope High art scholarship for a September 1976 recipient and support junior and club art shows.

Honor Students at Henderson State College Named on Honor Roll

A total of 242 students at Henderson State College earned honor roll status for the fall semester with GPA of 3.5+ and at least 12 semester hours. Notable honorees include Mary Ann Butler Royce Eaves Jr Judy Ann Kidd Cynthia Henderson and Joan A Riddle among others from Hope Prescott Nashville McCaskill and Rosston. Girl Scout cookies will be sold January 10 to 18 with five varieties and direct sales, led in Hope by Suella Tye. Navy Seaman Apprentice Joan A. Riddle, daughter of James A. Riddle of Lewisville, Ark, graduates from recruit training at Orlando and will report to Pensacola for further schooling. Marine Private Dennis R. Carlton of Rosston also graduates from recruit training at San Diego.
