Moderate fertilizer use urged to boost Arkansas crops

Hempstead County farmers are advised to apply nitrogen rich fertilizer to oats corn and cotton this spring. County agent Oliver L Adams notes supply delays may hinder orders and transportation. University agronomist Charles Simmons cites tests showing nitrate of soda at 100 pounds per acre raises oat yields about 40 bushels. Recommendations suggest 30-35 pounds nitrogen and phosphoric acid plus 10-20 pounds potash per acre, using 400 pounds of 4-8-4 fertilizer per acre with 100 pounds nitrogen later, and adjust for legume plowdowns and crop type.
