Vincent Foster, 16, son of Mr and Mrs L A Foster of Hope, raised three bales of cotton on two and a third acres on common dirt land near Hope. He earned 300 dollars from cotton and 50 dollars for seed, crediting intensive cultivation and fertilizer for the notable yield and profit. The item also notes a farm humor snippet and local business news involving William M Ramsey, son of former cafe operator W M Ramsey, who has become district manager for Grinnell Fire Protection Systems in the Phoenix area.
Authorities hunt for a 12 year old boy and a man after six people were tied up, a house ransacked, and nurse Marie Fasching found dead in a Leonia basement. Bergen County prosecutor Joseph Woodcock Jr. said cause of death not yet determined and Fasching cried out before dying.

France revalued its gold reserves to 170.40 dollars an ounce from 42.20, a mainly bookkeeping move giving a paper profit of over 12 billion. Algerian Finance Minister Ismail Mahrouq warned oil producers may refuse payments in devalued currencies, a topic for a summit in Algiers on January 24. The Shah of Iran suggested oil exporters could raise prices if gold pricing erodes their purchasing power.

Bruce Lanford, 35, a construction company supervisor, pulled a burning truck driver to safety and flagged a passing crane to lift the wreckage, freeing a critically injured woman, Dora Weisberg, 63, of Hollywood. Weisberg remained in critical condition after five hours of surgery. The incident occurred on Interstate 95 between Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
