New Trial for Rogers Woman

A February 13 retrial date was set in Benton Circuit Court for Virginia Rand on a second degree murder charge in the August 9 1959 Rogers restaurant owner H V Clark slaying. Rand, free on bond, seeks self defense claims after Clark was shot in her Rogers home. Court voids Dixon Yates damages ruling in decision

The Supreme Court, in a 6 to 3 decision, held the United States need not pay 1.867 million dollars in damages tied to the canceled Dixon Yates power plant contract. Chief Justice Warren wrote the majority, with Justice Harlan dissent joined by Justices Whitaker and Stewart. The ruling affirmed a government appeal from a Court of Claims decision.

U S Fleet Heads for Base at Cuba

U S Atlantic fleet units head toward Guantanamo Bay and the Caribbean for annual maneuvers drawing Castro propaganda. A flotilla of 150 ships including the Franklin D. Eisenhower cancels Dixon-Yates contract over conflict concerns

President Eisenhower said the Dixon-Yates steam plant contract with the Atomic Energy Commission was canceled because the conflict of interest was condoned by high officials. Memphis later decided to build its own plant, ending the need for private capacity.
