Opposition to national service bills shows signs of fading
Washington January 9 Congress moves on wartime labor shortages with growing support for sweeping manpower measures. Senator Johnson shifts to backing a national service bill in line with President Roosevelt's Saturday request. House hearings on draft for essential jobs begin tomorrow. Chairman Taft indicates GOP support for the plan. The proposal would compel selective service registrants to take essential assignments or face special service units for non combat duties.
