Various local religious activities are planned this week. Wilgon-Sorell rehearsals Friday night at the Bar Migs Mar, with Methodist and Bethel groups hosting services and prayer meetings through Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at Hope Church, Hirst Presbyterian, and other venues.
The Pat Cleburne chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held its January luncheon in the Barlow hotel private dining room with 24 members and three guests. Mrs. Lowethorpe presided as the meeting opened with the Confederate flag salute and US pledge. officers were elected as Mrs. J. M. O'Neal to succeed Mrs. Williams. A program on Jackson, Lee and Maury was presented by Mrs. Slusser with remarks by Mrs. Branch. singing by Mrs. Dick Wilkins followed. The circle Prudence Ruthey later met at Mrs. Mogley’s home with a revised meeting time to the third Thursday each month.
Mr and Mrs Willis Garrett Smith plan to move to Eastland Texas after a week with Dr and Mrs Don Smith and Mrs Jack Rogers returns from Hot Springs. Farry Johnson returns to Bylor School for Boys Chattanoo Be after Christmas with Mrs Johnson. Russell Todd Cornell of Scarsdale NY travels Friday for the wedding of his son Russell Bernard Cornell to Miss Mary Wilson. Attendants arriving from Dallas include Scott DeLee Virgil Salamon Barbara LaGrone and P D Smith. W Wilson of Little Rock also attends.
Singapore January court session sentences two young Malays, Rosli Bin Dolic and Moshidi Bin Sedik, to be hanged for the December murder of Dun can Stewart, governor of Sarawak. They were part of an anti-cession band seeking British rule to end the 1948 cession. Stewart died from a knife wound after the attack in Sibu. The youths admitted but were to bring evidence on stabbing before verdict. more band members face murder conspiracy charges.
New York reports actress Fay Emerson began a trip to Mexico City to pursue a divorce from Elliott Roosevelt. She insisted there is no other man, noted a private property settlement, and said the decision took time. Emerson wished Roosevelt happiness and declined to disclose grounds or terms.
Hospital entries show Julia Chester as admitted with Beryl Henry and others listed for Hope. Discharges include Mrs Dildy Reed and son Max Lee Gean, Mrs Mildred Cook and daughter Mildred Louise Blevins, Orville Mitchell Patmos and Josephine. Admitted Dwain Stevens and Master Dwain Stevens at Hope. Discharges include Mrs Oscar O Dell and Branch discharges include Johnette Houel and M Guil McRae and Joe Downs at Hope.
Long Island University remains a top college basketball force as it wins a thriller at Madison Square Garden over Bowling Green of Ohio to extend its season mark to 11-1. The Blackbirds, ranked fourth, have losses only to Kansas State and next face St. Louis and North Carolina State. Temple upsets NYU in overtime, while Texas A&M defeats Texas Christian in a Southwest game. The piece notes a separate fact about population growth of 10,000 daily.
