Page Two Embezzlement Case Before High Court

The Arkansas Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next Monday on a bid to withhold a mandate forcing John H. Pointer Jr. of Pine Bluff to start a five year prison term for embezzling more than $32,000. Pointer’s attorney argues he was denied a fair trial by an impartial jury and cites publicity affecting the Pine Bluff proceedings.

Two Cummins inmates charged with murder at prison

Ira Wallace aged 22 and Presley Hill aged 23 were charged with first degree murder in the death of Gerald Bittle at Cummins Prison Farm. Bittle was found dead in a cell shared with the two inmates. Wallace holds a four year robbery sentence from Crittenden County and Hill is serving a three year sentence for sodomy.

100000 Flood Victims in Malaya

Kuala Lumpur reports the worst floods in Malaysia's history with 100000 displaced, 38690 from seven Pahang towns, 26 dead across eight states, and many missing. Prime Minister Razak declares national disaster and mobilizes relief teams as Kuala Lumpur and surrounding areas flood. Rubber and tin production halted in key states.

Four Million Spent in Arkansas Campaigns 1970

Arkansas candidates spent roughly four million dollars in the 1970 state and district elections. Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller led with about 1.3 million in general and primary spending. Seven general election candidates failed to file expenditure reports, including Senate contender Carl E. Sorrell. Other nonreporting House candidates listed by district and party are Rudy Moore Jr, Paul Shaver, Farris E. Howard, E. L. Luttrell, Jimmie Don McKhissack, and Sam Serio Jr.

Bumpers Backs North South Turnpike for Ozarks Growth

Gov elect Dale Bumpers urged swift push for a four state north south turnpike through the Ozarks saying it is vital to industrial growth. He spoke to Ozarka luncheon and pledged full cooperation to secure the road linking Kansas City to New Orleans as a feasibility study valued at 27500 investigated the 445 mile route across Arkansas Oklahoma Kansas and Missouri. The project’s feasibility was endorsed by Harry E Bailey of Oklahoma City.

Jewish Trials in Russia Postponed

In Leningrad two more trials of Jews were postponed for one day without explanation. Foreign press access was barred. The defendants face charges of complicity in a June plot by nine Jews to hijack a Soviet airliner to flee to Israel. Previous sentences included two deaths and seven labor camps. Yulf Zalmanson was slated to stand trial today but was postponed to Wednesday.
