Hempstead Quorum Court adopts nine ordinances and two resolutions

The Hempstead County Quorum Court held an organizational meeting chaired by County Judge Wayne Bohannon with all nine JPs present. Over five and a half hours seven ordinances and two resolutions were passed with emergency clauses, including Roberts Rules adoption and a zero-budget requirement for agency requests. Regular meetings are set for the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Hempstead County Courthouse large courtroom.

Ford proposes tax cuts to aid middle income families

President Ford proposes a $10 billion personal income tax cut with $2.5 billion in corporate relief and a $5.1 billion two year rise in personal Social Security taxes. Hearing set in Hope aggravated assault case

Gerald Edward Jones of Hope faces aggravated assault charges for the shooting of Dale Brown of Hope. A Hempstead County Circuit Court hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday. Brown was shot in the leg after an argument outside the VFW on Highway 67 East and later released from the hospital.

Bill Mudgett dies at 85 in Hope Texas

W A Bill Mudgett 85 died early Tuesday after a lengthy illness in a local hospital. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the church administrative board. He served as secretary of the Millwood Shrine Club and was a 32 degree Mason. Survivors include wife Belle, son Allen, two brothers, one sister, and five grandchildren. Funeral services 2 p.m. Wednesday at Herndon chapel with Rev. Ralph Hale officiating. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery by Herndon Funeral Home.

Escapees in Arkansas allegedly steal guns and a pickup

Three Greene County Jail escapees are believed to have stolen a .38 pistol and two shotguns plus a 1961 white and green pickup with Missouri plates. A Cash resident, Richard Lacy, was wounded in a failed robbery attempt. The suspects Roger Ballew Johnny Orr and Darrell Simpson fled since the Cash incidents and are considered dangerous.

Reward Offered for Stolen Hereford Cattle

Ned Purtle and Son Hereford Ranch report seven registered Hereford cows stolen from their ranch after the fence was cut in two places on 1 30 and cattle loaded from the corral. Ned Ray Purtle offers a 2500 reward for arrest, conviction, or return of the cattle. Similar thefts occurred in August when 14 head disappeared.

Planes join search for missing Panamanian tanker Grand Zenith

American and Canadian aircraft joined a North Atlantic search for the Grand Zenith missing with 8 million gallons of heavy oil aboard. The 18717 ton vessel disappeared after last contact near Cape Sable Nova Scotia with coast guard officials noting failed radio attempts.
