Senate inquiry details Stark on West Coast fleet after Pearl Harbor
Washington January 3 Admiral Harold Stark testified before the Senate Home inquiry committee that a group of unspecified senators urged towing the fleet farther west after Pearl Harbor but he resisted. Stark recalled a Capitol Hill conference with General George C. Marshall following the December 7, 1941 attack and said Marshall warned of Japanese plans to deliver a diplomatic reply. He noted he reported to President Roosevelt that although eight battleships were out of action the main fighting force remained intact. The committee resumed with paid counsel Seth W. Richardson to be paid $9,800 yearly, and Stark discussed delays and communications surrounding the crucial warning message relayed seven hours after the attack due to transmission issues.
