Taxes and the Terrific Thirties Enduring Business Struggles
Henry, a 60 year old Texas businessman, recalls the 1930s as a era of heavy taxation and government intrusion. He notes the NRA wage limits, payroll taxes, and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation loans that kept his plant alive, but warns profits and freedom from reporting rose only with ongoing strain. He believes 1939 offered cautious optimism as Congress grows more reasonable on taxes and relations between business and government may improve.
