Moving holidays to Mondays faces broader adoption
The editor argues for shifting midweek holidays to the nearest Monday to create longer weekend observances. A 1960s survey shows broad support from industries and services for three day weekends, naming Washington’s Birthday Memorial Day Independence Day Veterans Day and Thanksgiving as candidates, while Christmas and New Year’s are excluded. The piece notes religious objections to Christmas but says memory and significance matter more than exact dates.
