Arkansas began the year under fair skies and cool temperatures. The National Weather Service expects rising temperatures with clouds as high pressure moves east, followed by a second air mass bringing colder air and a chance of rain through the weekend.

Two people were killed and two injured in a two car head on collision on U.S. 65 near alvuunniki Arkansas early Friday marking the first highway deaths in the state for 1971. Victims were Mrs. Janey Birchfield Royce 22 of near Lake Village driver of one car and Martha A Birchfield 25 of near McGehee a passenger. Other passenger Sarah M Howe 23 of Tyler Texas injured and driver of the other car David Ricketts 30 of Dumas injured.

Washington AP reports the U.S. Chamber of Commerce foresees the gross national product rising about 7 percent next year, with roughly half the gain from inflation and a 3 percent real output increase. The real GNP would reach about $1.05 trillion, as wholesale prices edged up 0.1 percent in December and 2.3 percent for 1970.

A five-man U.S. Navy supply boat crew was killed in the Mekong Delta ambush. Additional U.S. and South Vietnamese fatalities and dozens of injuries followed from booby traps, with nearly two dozen incidents attributed to North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces during the cease-fire period. Cambodian and Laotian engagements also noted, including a downed U.S. Air Force captain over the Plain of Jars.
DES ARC Ark AP Sheriff E Grady said two hunters apparently drowned in backwater of Bayou Des Arc during a hunting trip. The body of Glen Thurmond 26 of Des Arc was found. companion Larry Holloway 25 of Deg Arc was missing. A search began after another hunter found their boat.
