Quaker General Nathanael Greene on 1 cent Army stamp

A portrait pairing for the George Washington cent shows General Nathanael Greene, the “Quaker General,” second only to Washington as a war leader. Born to a Quaker preacher, Greene joined the revolutionary army in 1774, led Rhode Island forces in Boston’s war effort, saved the Americans at Brandywine, commanded the Southern army, won at Eutaw Springs, received land grants and a Congressional medal, and died in Georgia in 1786 at age 44.
