Excerpts from the February edition of Roy Anderson’s Dear Folks newsletter describe a private mimeographed monthly for 250 readers. It recalls wartime Home Town News and includes light reflections on mail, postage costs, and humorous anecdotes about letters and parrots as well as a note on television and radio’s effects.
About 150 police with shields swept Isla Vista nonstop through debris strewn streets as 500 youths gathered under a 6 pm to 6 am curfew. Tear gas rose, rocks flew, and one girl was arrested along with several others. a boy was hit by a squad car and hospitalized. Governor Reagan had declared an extreme emergency as the third straight night of disorder continued.
In Fayetteville Arkansas four people charged with maiming in a case involving two sisters pleaded innocent at arraignment. All were released on $2,500 bond. The sisters Sheila Garmon 28 and Cindy Perez 16 said relatives and neighbors believed they were witches and were beaten for over a month to drive out an evil spirit. Prosecutor Mahlon Gibson filed two counts of maiming against Donald Garmon 27 Maria Perez 47 W A Brown 51 and Sarah Brown 33. The sisters live in a rural county area. The two sisters said they were accused of casting a spell on Garmons-year-old daughter who has epilepsy. Witnesses include Maria Perez children Fila 14 and Richard 12. Bond for the witnesses was $100. No charge against the other party.
The Kiewast quintuplets were removed from oxygen enriched air, with Dr. Stanley James saying they are guardedly optimistic about survival. Their mother Margaret is reported in good condition and the five babies were breathing ordinary air in Columbia Presbyterian Babies Hospital on Thursday.
Forrest City Arkansas AP James Edward Scott 20 was sentenced to die in the electric chair May 22 for the first degree rape of a 15 year old white girl. Judge Elmo Taylor presided and Scott’s attorney E Trimble said he would appeal. Two other Negro youths were earlier sentenced to life in the same case. In a related case Johnny Harper 17 of Memphis got seven years for a August robbery of William Epps 63 at a Forrest City grocery store.
City police probe three break ins last night at Jumbo Burger Center on West Third Street Yerger Junior High School Office and Dairy Queen on East Third. Undetermined loot, possibly up to 300 dollars, reported by Officers Mildi and Linyard.
French President Georges Pompidou arrived amid orderly picketing in San Francisco welcomed by Mayor Alioto and a key to the city. He planned meetings with Jewish leaders opposing France's sale of Mirage jets to Libya, a youth address at the Commonwealth Club and visits to Stanford and Lasers Center before events in Chicago and New York.

Senator Bob W Douglas says he will propose an anti busing bill if Governor Rockefeller omits it from the special session call. Rockefeller aide says administration has no plan to include such a proposal. Douglas prepared a resolution to extend the session after Rockefellers call so lawmakers can consider antibusing legislation like New Yorks. A two thirds vote would be required to extend the session.
AP dispatch reports the largest 24 hour shelling total since February, with 35 enemy rocket and mortar strikes. U S and allied losses include 16 Vietnamese, 26 Americans wounded, 44 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers killed, plus nine American fatalities from a Navy helicopter crash in the Mekong Delta. Ground fighting was light overall.
