Pine Bluff Switchman Killed by Freight Train

Charles Raymond Davis 22 of Pine Bluff was struck by a freight train in the Cotton Belt Railroad dump yard and died Thursday. He had worked as a switchman for 18 months, a company spokesman said.

Hempstead Voters Go to Polls Saturday

Hope and Hempstead County residents head to the polls on Saturday to vote on a $150,000 Highway Bond issue proposed by Gov. Orval Faubus. Polls close at 6 30 p.m. Election officials should bring election boxes to the County Clerk's office after the count. Voting locations listed.

Nor man Butler a 26 year old Bronx enforcer was arrested in New York and charged with the assassination of Malcolm X. Police say he acted as a muscleman in the Black Muslim movement and was previously free on bail in a separate shooting case.

Magnolia bonds on ballot for two plant expansions

Magnolia residents will vote Saturday on 2.75 million in Act bonds to fund expansions. Firestone Tire & Rubber seeks 750 thousand for a 50,009 square foot building and W Shanhouse Sons Inc plans 2 million for a 100,000 square foot distribution center tied to its Magnolia plant. Shanhouse, a Kayser-Roth subsidiary, makes garments for men and boys.

Jet bomber tanker collision reported off Atlantic Coast

Pease Air Force Base announced a Ba7 bomber and a KCL35 tanker collided about 700 miles east of Dow Air Force Base in Maine. It was unclear if any crew survived as planes of these types normally carry four men. In Alabama, Jimmy Lee Jackson, 26, Marion, died in Selma after a Feb 18 shooting during racial violence and emergency surgery. An autopsy was planned.
