State Teachers Minimum Pay Bills Delayed

LITTLE ROCK An effort to bring to a final vote the Rozzell teachers salary bill was blocked in the senate Tuesday when Mitchell of Prescott discovered a technical error in an amendment adopted last week. After correction, Shepherd of Russellville secured adoption of a new amendment granting five years continuous teaching experience as equivalent to one year of college training for state aid. The bill would provide a formula for minimum salaries and allocate revenue from liquor and sales taxes to aid districts unable to meet costs locally. Other bills passed include prohibiting oil purchasers from deducting evaporation costs, establishing insanity as a divorce ground after three years in a mental hospital, and a 3.5 million dollar debt service fund. A 56 to 9 vote transferred Stone county to a new district, and plans for congressional redistricting were discussed. The House Revenue Committee reported two tax bills with one measure likely to be brought before the committee. Continued on page four.
