Plan to Concentrate on 20 States Fails
The Democratic Governors Caucus rejected a proposal by political consultant Joseph Napolitan to focus the 1972 presidential bid on 20 key states while ignoring others. Napolitan said a nominee could win with 18 of those states. The plan listed states Humphrey carried in 1968 plus Alaska and others.Meanwhile Senator Muskie signaled willingness to debate with other candidates if a suitable arrangement is made, drawing criticism from Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty who called the move a subterfuge.
