Aquanaut Dies During Sealab 3 Dive Near San Clemente
Berry L. Cannon, 33, an electronics engineer from Panama City Florida, died of a heart attack at 610 feet while checking air leaks in the Sealab 3 habitat off San Clemente Island. He was one of four divers lowered from the USS Elk River to inspect leaks in the submerged habitat. Cannon left the transfer capsule and was swimming toward the habitat when he was stricken. The Navy cited cardiac arrest as the cause of death, the first in the Sealab program since 1964.
